FORTUNE NO 1 is a straightforward spot in Monterey Park that channels the distinct flavors and morning rituals of northern China, particularly Tianjin-style breakfast. This is not a flashy restaurant — rather, it’s a compact, no-nonsense diner where locals come seeking familiar, comforting dishes that evoke home. The atmosphere is casual and unpretentious, with friendly staff who naturally guide you through the menu if you’re new to these tastes.

The focus here is on traditional breakfast staples: chewy, juicy Tianjin-style stuffed buns bursting with savory pork and scallions; crispy, flaky baked sesame cakes; and warm soybean milk served alongside. You’ll find a good range of dumplings — from pork and bok choy to shrimp mixes — each boiled to tender perfection. Dishes like the seaweed egg soup and fried shredded pancakes offer hearty, warming bites that pair well with the straightforward, slightly rustic setting.

This spot is best visited in the morning, when many locals stop by for breakfast before the day picks up pace. It’s the sort of place that feels like a morning ritual for those in the know, especially for people who appreciate northern Chinese comfort food with a straightforward, home-cooked vibe. If you’re curious about authentic regional flavors beyond the usual Chinese-American dishes, this narrow restaurant tucked on E Garvey feels familiar rather than curated for tourists.

The casual interior and unpretentious service make it a relaxed place where you can enjoy a quick meal or linger a bit if you’re with friends or family. It’s inviting to diners who want to start their day with something traditional, unfiltered, and genuine. Even visitors less familiar with Chinese cuisine have found the food approachable and hearty, making it a spot that bridges local communities through shared savory flavors and simple, honest dishes.

Super authentic northern china breakfast. The bun has oil sipping out. (Shown in pc too). That is the best state of a bun. 懂得都懂。 the cashier and server were very friendly and helpful. Would come here every time I visit LA in the future.

Quaint little restaurant that serves delicious meals at a reasonable price. A friend of mine brought me and I enjoyed it very much! It’s the kind of place that makes you feel at home and I’m not even Asian lol. Thanks for the delicious meal to Fortune No 1, May you receive much fortune to come!

2025-3-21 update: still love the Bao the most. Tried huixiang Bao this time. Love it! Others are ok, normal standard… (zhajiang noodle is not good). 2024-3-29 update: huixiang lamb bao is great! Traditional Chinese breakfast. Love it!

TianJin breakfast, and it is authentic. Sesame pastry, lamb tripe soup, JianBingGuoZi, and Buns are all worth trying. I will come here daily to have breakfast. I took some pictures that showed Chinese Celebrities, so you guys might meet them here:)

Jianbing is great. I think they used green bean flour, authentic and not sticky in mouth. Tofu soup is also great, not too salty, just right. I ordered my breakfast and ordered Baozi to-go. After I finished my breakfast, the Baozi is ready.

Great food variety! You can understand the northeast Chinese breakfast culture when you visit this place. Food is authentic and delicious. People who work in the kitchen can be loud, you can experience the streets breakfast atmosphere here. Food is very tasty according to friends who went with me, who originally from the Shandong region. Ilike 油条 most. Food comes pretty quickly, serves is okay, but cleanness have rooms to improve.
